Workshop on sound conducted by Katharina Stadler (artist-in-residence)

Every city has a unique soundscape(s). This is due to both the distinctiveness and diversity of a city, as well as to us as individuals perceiving our environment/daily surroundings.

During the workshop, the group discussed some theoretical and possible practical approaches to the inter-linkage of sound and space. The participants were asked to imagine Tehran’s most typical sound(s) as to create a sound map guiding tourists to acoustic sight-hearing (instead of the more common sight-seeing). Then the group took a walk within the sound(s) of Sazmanab’s surroundings, exploring the previously discussed through their own ears.

Katharina Stadler is a Vienna born conceptual artist, curator and founder of ‘Concept and Theory – Tbilisi’. She studied Music, Theater and Cultural Communication studies at Humboldt University in Berlin, graduating with a thesis on the interconnection and opposition of voice and silence as worship in Augustine’s writings. Since 2010 Katharina is based in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she has been running the Informal Master Programs at the Center of Contemporary Art Tbilisi from 2011 to 2013. Since 2011 she has also been teaching both art and visual anthropology students and conducting workshops at different locations.

CCA-Tbilisi is an independent, nonprofit organization. The main goal of CCA-Tbilisi is to support the development of contemporary art in Georgia and in the Caucasus region as well. CCA-Tbilisi works on contextualization of contemporary (not only) visual culture and supports Georgian and international artists to effectively present creative production to local and international audiences.
