The Tehran/Pittsburgh in Random

10 Jul 2010

A live screening of videos curated by Sohrab Kashani and Jon Rubin for Red76 and “The YouTube School for Social Politics” and directly from YouTube posts shot both in Tehran and Pittsburgh was presented at Sazmanab (Tehran) and Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh). A back and forth format utilised the vast and idiosyncratic resources of YouTube to present first-person video accounts that reflected on the daily life of each city.

Scattered throughout YouTube lie countless points of view, scattered moments of histories, both personal and collective. By arranging these video segments – documentaries, personal missives and old family films, newsreels, music videos – new light can be shed on the sociopolitical landscape of history past, and history present.

The forty-minute screening was followed by a live Skype conversation between students in Pittsburgh and Tehran in English, together with presentations by Jon Rubin and Sam Gould, lead instigator of Red76.
