Siting Performance ⧚ Richard Schechner

16 Apr 2011 - 17 Apr 2011

A two-day workshop with Richard Schechner, where artists, writers, and performers in Tehran and NYC discussed contemporary performance art practices, new media, and citizenship. Led by Richard Schechner, with Ava Ansari, Bavand Behpoor, and Molly Kleiman, and organised by The Back Room.

The two-day workshop, conducted via digital technology, was an opportunity for artists, writers, and performers in Tehran and New York to discuss issues related to contemporary performance art practices, new media, and citizenship with the aim to foster partnerships between participants and develop works in the two cities.

What is the relationship between performance and citizenship? How can (and should) performance enact and critique strategies and tactics for social change? How can we use the digital technologies available to not merely convey information, but to facilitate artistic collaborations and be a platform for artistic work? How can we use re-performance and distributed performance to enable artists to represent their perspectives in their own voices? How can these discussions evolve into future collaborations and what might those projects look like?
