Performance on Trial

20 Nov 2011

In conjunction with Performa, Wafaa Bilal and Shirin Neshat discussed their recent works at the time — A Call and OverRuled. These two performances engaged and questioned the act of bearing witness. Their audiences, too, were left culpable, participants in show trials and ephemeral memorials. Bilal and Neshat’s discussion was moderated by Nicholas Mirzoeff, author of The Right to Look: A Counter History of Visuality (2011) and professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University.

The event was curated by Ava Ansari and Molly Kleiman, organised by The Back Room in collaboration with White Box, and was hosted by White Box in New York and Sazmanab in Tehran. It was broadcast live online via Ustream.
