Performance As Sketchpad ⧚ Maryam Taghavi

25 Sep 2012

Workshop on performance conducted by Maryam Taghavi (artist-in-residence)

Performance as an art practice has helped artists investigate ideas before they made objects since the early 1900s, and a strong medium experimented on countless formal, social, and political levels making it an instrumental factor in shaping the art of the 20th-century. During the workshop, the participants briefly examined highlights from diverse works of the past century and discussed possible ways of collapsing previous disciplines to achieve new forms of production. They brainstormed to develop concepts based on verbal or physical materials and performed as a group and also individually to test the actualisation of these concepts.

Maryam Taghavi graduated from Emily Carr University, Vancouver in 2008 and since then has been experimenting across diverse mediums, ranging from drawing, performance, sculpture and site-specific installation; nonetheless, issues surrounding adaptation, displacement and collapse remain constant in her work. Mainly informed by mundane activities, materials and situations, her work aims to remodel acquired set of relationships and negotiate multiple scenarios to aspire a condition for ephemeral experience, contemplation and other forms of exchange. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, Mexico, and Iran.
