Sazmanab-Ab/Anbar presented the exhibition “Some Links, Some Projections” by the Berlin-based artist Anahita Razmi.
The exhibition, “Some Links, Some Projections,” brought together new works by Anahita Razmi, most of which conceived for the occasion. Dealing with shifting relations of specific locations in times of globalisation, the random “Some Links, Some Projections” were pinned down to site-specific installations at Sazmanab-Ab/Anbar.
“A Tale of Tehrangeles” (2013) takes the beginning of Charles Dickens’ novel, “A Tale of Two Cities,” as a basis for a visual collage of Tehran and Los Angeles. After showings in Los Angeles (MAK Center, 2013) and Europe (abc Berlin, 2013, Kunstraum Riehen/CH, 2014), the presentation in Tehran completed the journey to destinations important in the work itself. The video work, “Anahita Razmi Promo” (2014), refers to the work of American artist Chris Burden, “Chris Burden Promo,” shifting its original concept to an Iranian media landscape. The original clip, shown 1976 during the advertising segments of US-based TV Channels, listed a selection of famous artist names written in bold graphics: “Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Picasso…,” and then, “Burden.” The list was followed by the disclaimer, “Paid for by Chris Burden – artist.” The third installation, “Wall Links, Floor Links” (2014), materialises stock photo images within the exhibition space. The installation presented a set of inquiries rather than a narrative, exploring the relations of location and media, generated images, representational equations, and visual memory.
Anahita Razmi is a visual artist based in Berlin mainly working with video, installation, new media and performance. Her work reconsiders visual memory, stereotypes, and standards between Orient and Occident. In 2014 she was awarded the Goethe-Institute Villa Kamogawa Residency in Kyoto. Other residencies and awards include the MAK-Schindler Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program, Los Angeles (2013) and The Emdash Award, Frieze Foundation (2011).
